Our good friend, club member, and skating parent Russ Kuhn passed away this past
weekend following a tough illness. In addition to wife, Barbara, and skating
daughter Maddie, Russ leaves three sons, Brenton, Bradley, and Todd. Services
will be held Monday, April 14, at 10 am at the St. Patrick Church,
10815 N. 84th St, Scottsdale. Visitation will be Sunday, April 13, 5 – 8 pm,
at the Wessinger Mortuary, 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, with lunch following
the services. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends who wish to
contribute do so to Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong Foundation in Russ’s memory.
Congratulations to Shayna Moellenberg for finishing 4th in Novice Ladies at the
Gletscher Cup competition in Grindelwald, Switzerland, March 14 – 16, 2008!
Club
members Chelsi Guillen and Danny Curzon placed 10th out of 20 teams in the pairs events at
the 2008 World Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, February 25 – March 2.
Each of their two programs scored a “season’s best” among their international outings
this season. Chelsi and Danny are happy to have represented the Club, Arizona,
and the U.S. this year and are grateful for everyone’s support. Kudos to them and
also to Jill Kinsley for her never-ending send-off posters and enthusiasm!
The Coyotes Ice Ensemble will be holding its "Annual Used Dress/Equipment Sale"
on February 26th, 28th, 29th and March 1st. This sale will be promoted to the
Alltel "Learn to Skate" classes. The team will be gathering inventory beginning
February 18th. It's a great time to clear out those closets and recoup a few dollars!

local training mates Tiffany Vise and Derek Trent won the pewter medal in Senior Pairs and were

Everyone got into the holiday spirit during the December 23 club ice session at the
Alltel Ice Den. In addition to club members, Learn-to-Skate skaters were invited and
introduced to the club. Rudolph took time away from Christmas preparations to attend –
who knew he could skate? Thank you to the Junior Board for organizing this fun event!
If you missed it, be sure to check out the
photo slide show.
Skating two excellent programs, including a triple axel – triple toe combination, Douglas Razzano placed fourth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final, December 7 – 8,
in Gdansk, Poland. This is a major accomplishment that moves Douglas up to the
top 50 men in the ISU’s world ranking. Congratulations to Douglas and to coaches
Doug & Lara Ladret and Grant Rorvick!
Anyone who was there or who watched the live broadcasts on Ice Network saw all four of our
Coyotes pairs skate nearly flawless programs in the final round at Junior Nationals in Salt
Lake City, November 30 – December 1. Big smiles on all faces in the Kiss and Cry area
following their performances, including coaches Larry Schrier, Dawn Piepenbrink McCosh,
and JT Pfoh! Special congratulations to Juvenile Pairs Silver Medalists, Caitlin Fields
& Max Settlage! We are proud of all four pairs’ placements in this National field:
- Shannon Wells & Adam Civiello, 7th in Intermediate Pairs
- Hailli Dorman & Patrick Ferraioli, 9th in Intermediate Pairs
- Caitlin Fields & Max Settlage, 2nd in Juvenile Pairs
- Alexis Gagnon & Michael Petropulos, 13th in Juvenile Pairs
Douglas Razzano received official word that he will be competing in the Junior Grand
Prix Final in Gdansk, Poland, December 6 – 9. This will be the first time for an
Arizona skater to compete in this prestigious international event. Douglas will
be competing against four Americans, two Russians, and one Chinese. Congratulations,
Douglas, and Good Luck!
Having perfected it while training here at our home rink, Tiffany Vise and
Derek Trent executed the first ever successful throw quadruple jump in international
competition at the Grand Prix event in Paris, France, November 15 – 17. They received
positive GOE marks on the element and it was ratified by the ISU. They finished
in fourth place in a strong field of pairs. Congratulations to Tiffany and Derek
and to their coaches, Doug and Lara Ladret for making history!
Our Sectionals team performed well at Pacific Coast and Midwesterns, November 15 – 17,
bringing home 2 gold medals, 1 silver, and 2 pewter. In addition to medaling,
these skaters have qualified for Nationals:
- Douglas Razzano, 4th in Senior Men
- Max Aaron, 1st in Junior Men
- Chelsi Guillen & Danny Curzon, 1st in Junior Pairs
- Megan Gueli & Grant Marron, 2nd in Junior Pairs
- Shannon Wingle & Ryan Devereaux, 4th in Junior Ice Dance
Competing Novice singles for the first time at the Sectional level,
Chelsi Guillen and Chris Petropulos each gained valuable experience,
but didn’t make the top four.
Also competing and earning gold medals in San Diego were these Regional Champions:
- Shannon Wells & Adam Civiello, 1st in Intermediate Pairs
- Caitlin Fields & Max Settlage, 1st in Juvenile Pairs
Congratulations to the whole team!
The CSCA Junior Board is sponsoring a Club Ice session on December 23 (5:10 pm to 6:45 pm) to collect toys to be delivered to
patients at Phoenix Children's Hospital. All CSCA and Alltel Ice Den Learn to Skate members are
welcome and admission is one item from the approved list.
Activities will be presented by the
CSCA Junior Board and a great time is sure to be had by all!
If you can't make it to the event but would like to
make a donation, bins will be available in the lobby of the Ice Den Monday through Thursday each week
through the month of December.
Our Junior membership is regaining momentum under the leadership of its new officers:
| |
Meghan Speranzo, President |
| |
Naomi Onaka, Vice President |
| |
Molly Aaron, Secretary |
| |
Brittany Gianiorio, Treasurer |
They are in the process of planning several different activities ranging from
community service and fund-raising to socializing. Any club member age 10 – 17
interested in getting involved can contact one of the officers or Junior Board
advisor Patti McNeill.
Many of our club skaters have been honored with special awards at non-qualifying
competitions throughout the year. We post these on the Special Awards page.
Please let us know if you receive such an award so we can include you.
(And take a peek at the list from time to time so you can congratulate a
fellow skater for a recent accomplishment!)
Douglas Razzano won the silver medal in a field of 27 men at the Junior Grand Prix
event in Sheffield, England, October 19 – 21. His medal in the last event of the
competition saved Team USA from being shut out of the medals and was applauded
enthusiastically by his USA teammates. Combined with his 4th place finish in Estonia,
Douglas finished the Junior Grand Prix series in 9th place overall, making him the
first alternate for the JGP Final. Chelsi Guillen and Danny Curzon have also wrapped
up their first Junior Grand Prix season, finishing 9th of 15 teams in Estonia and 10th
of 18 teams in Sheffield. Congratulations to Douglas, Chelsi, and Danny and to their
coaches Doug & Lara Ladret.
Club member Shari Bochantin lost her battle with ovarian cancer on October 18.
Her daughter, Rebecca, is a club skater and has been a member the Coyotes Synchronized
Team.
Shari will be missed not only by her family and close friends, but also by the many
others she touched through her community involvement. Anyone wishing to help out
the family through food donation may contact Ella at Delicious Deliveries,
602-220-0000 or ella@100mph.com.
Our skaters turned in many great performances and some came just that close to reaching
their qualifying goal. At the top of the list are two skaters who qualified for Sectionals:
Max Aaron, 2nd in Junior Men, and Chris Petropulos, 4th in Novice Men. Congrats, Max and Chris
Landing in the Sectionals 1st alternate spot, Katlynn McNab placed 5th in the final round of
Novice Ladies, having won her qualifying round. Max Settlage is in the 1st alternate spot
for Junior Nationals, finishing 5th in Intermediate Men. It’s tough to just miss a secure
advancement spot, but these skaters should be proud of their placements.

The historic shores of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, provided the backdrop
for this year’s International Theatre on Ice Competition on June 22-23.
Twenty-four teams from across the country participated in a full schedule
of activities. Coach Nancy Pluta and the 12-member Coyotes Ice Ensemble
proudly represented the Coyotes Skating Club of Arizona in the Novice
division. The team received 7th place in the choreographic exercise
for their presentation of "Dancing in the Street" and 10th for their
“Route 66” free skate routine. In addition to competing, highlights
included the traditional trading of pins among the competitors and
the team’s visit to Plimoth Plantation. The Ensemble is grateful for
the generous support that they have received this season from their
family members (especially the 22 that traveled with the team),
the Alltel Ice Den, the Coyotes Skating Club of Arizona, and the community.
Click here to see pictures of the team.
